Preparing for Our Expanding Team

This year started off with a nice surprise – a visit from a family member! The last time Jesse’s brother, David, came to Zambia was when he helped build our old house at the Rapid 14 Livingstone base. He had never seen Chipepo, though, and I think he really enjoyed seeing our base and the ministry happening here. For two weeks, Jesse and David worked hard laying tile in our house, building block corners for various construction projects around the base and doing other small jobs. Each day he was guaranteed to see another random aspect of our lives! When I asked what were his top most intense moments, he mentioned these: grabbing a block that had a scorpion in it while building; one of the kids throwing up their breakfast in the van on the winding mountain roads; and when he and Jesse took a small boat out on the lake and the engine shut off just as they approached a pod of hippos!

Another intense moment happened just as we sat down to eat a big Saturday morning breakfast I had prepared. One of Jesse’s disciples, Kebby, called to ask if Jesse could help drive his son to the hospital about 45 minutes away because he was having an asthma attack. He said they had tried to take his son to the local clinic the night before but were turned away. The boy almost stopped breathing that night. We had the supplies on hand to give him a nebulizer treatment and I thought it may take too long for him to be seen at the hospital that may not even have the medicine he needed. Jesse and David picked up the family and brought them to our home where we treated him. The poor thing was exhausted and slept in his grandmother’s lap. Before he reached back home he had already perked up and was eating the cookies we gave him. The family gave us a goat as a sign of their immense gratitude and we also were so grateful to be able to help. We prayed over this boy 1 year ago concerning asthma and he has not had attack again until now so please agree with us that this issue will not return.
